I limiti ancora presenti

  • BPM, fase e primo battere.

No: tutto avviene in tempo reale, senza lettura anticipata dell’audio.

Audio e impostazioni

Quale ingresso dà i risultati migliori?

Che cosa significa SENTO ME STESSO?

Quali tempi e metri posso usare?

Posso usare l’app senza prova o acquisto valido?

No. I confronti su musica reale e i controlli automatici servono a individuare regressioni sul materiale disponibile.

FAQs and honest limits

What to expect, where the app can be wrong, and which controls can help.

Updated 27 October 2026

The app listens to music as it plays, without reading future audio. Lock is neither immediate nor infallible, even when a song is already playing.

Limits that still apply

Getting started

What does Virtual Percussionist do?

It listens to music and adds shaker, congas, clap, tambourine and triangle. It follows the tempo through MIXER, the IPAD microphone or a file in TRACK. It is a percussion companion: it does not replace a full drum kit or add bass or other instruments.

Does it analyse the track ahead of playback?

No: everything happens in real time, without reading future audio. In TRACK too, tempo is inferred from audio as it plays. The app therefore needs to listen before locking and cannot know a change before it happens.

Why does it wait after I tap START?

With FOLLOW on and START NOW off, it waits for a stable lock. Waiting time depends on the music: there is no guaranteed number of seconds. START NOW allows an immediate entry at the last known or default tempo, which may be provisional.

Lock and continuity

Does it follow changes in tempo?

FOLLOW tracks recognisable changes, but is not infallible. Rubato, abrupt changes, complex fills and passages with little rhythmic evidence can cause lag, errors or lost lock. FIXED instead plays at the BPM you set and does not follow the band.

Why does the percussion sometimes go silent during a song?

PAUSE IF OFF can fade the percussion when the app judges the lock unreliable; DYNAMICS can reduce or stop the part during very quiet passages. The protection can intervene even when the music sounds steady. Reports of overly frequent interruptions in TRACK are still being checked: we do not claim they are fixed. Check the input and level; TAP or FIXED lets you supply the tempo. You can disable PAUSE IF OFF to favour continuity, but this removes that protective muting: it does not make detection more accurate.

Why is the BPM sometimes half or double?

Some grooves support more than one rhythmic interpretation. Automatic detection can choose a different level from the one you want; once the part is playing it does not freely switch octaves. Use ÷2, ×2 or TAP. This is an existing limitation, not something the app always resolves by itself.

Why can the entry sound displaced even when the BPM is right?

Tempo, beat position and the first beat of the bar are different estimates. Correct BPM does not guarantee correct phase, especially in drum-free intros, rubato or room-microphone input. If the one is displaced, tap THE 1 IS HERE on the downbeat. Phase accuracy remains a limitation: perfect alignment on every song is not promised.

Does it keep time when the drums drop out?

The clock can keep running, but without clear beats there is less evidence to confirm or correct it. A long break can therefore make the return uncertain. Exact timekeeping through every silence or rhythm-free passage is not guaranteed; FIXED is useful when you want to supply a constant tempo.

What if the next song stays at the previous tempo after silence?

In a long file or continuous MIXER feed, automatic lock onto the next song can fail. You may still need to tap STOP and then START. Use TAP or FIXED to supply the tempo if needed. We do not claim every such change is fully automatic.

Audio and settings

Which input gives the best results?

For live use, favour MIXER with a clean signal and an interface or mixer offering input and output together. TRACK removes room-acoustic variability, but still has detection limits. IPAD is handy for practice and is more sensitive to noise, distance, reverberation and percussion feeding back into the microphone.

What does I HEAR MYSELF mean?

The played percussion reaches the microphone at a level that makes it hard to distinguish from the music. Turn it down or move the device away from the speakers. Own-sound removal helps, but cannot eliminate every feedback path or room reflection.

Can I use AirPods? What about delay or clicks?

TRACK can play through AirPods. Bluetooth, routing, interface and buffer settings contribute to delay: identical synchronisation on every connection is not guaranteed. Live MIXER use needs a suitable input/output connection. If you hear clicks, try a larger buffer; a short buffer reduces delay but increases dropout risk. LATENCY helps calibrate the rig, without guaranteeing removal of every delay.

Which tempos and meters can I use?

You can set 50–200 BPM manually. AUTO can interpret half or double tempo and favours roughly 49–168 BPM when choosing the rhythmic level: this does not guarantee automatic lock across the whole manual range. METRO offers 4/4 and 3/4. There is no dedicated recognition of 6/8, 12/8 or other irregular meters.

Access and compatibility

Can I use the app without valid trial or purchase access?

The public version requires valid Pro access: an active trial, subscription or lifetime purchase. The 7-day free trial is for eligible new subscribers; lifetime is a one-time purchase without a trial. Without access, the purchase page stays open. If you already purchased, use Restore purchases. Actual prices are those displayed by Apple.

Does it need Internet? Is audio recorded or sent anywhere?

Audio analysis happens on your device and does not require uploading music. The app does not record or export audio and has no account of its own. Purchases, restoration and some access checks may require Apple services and a connection: unlimited offline access is not promised. Read the privacy policy.

What does AI ERROR mean?

The model needed for automatic detection is unavailable or failed to load. In the Store version, automatic following is blocked rather than silently replaced with a test detector. With valid access, TAP and FIXED remain available. If the message persists, contact support.

Which devices is it designed for?

For iPhone, iPad and Apple silicon Macs through Designed for iPad. The app is designed for iPad first; identical results on every device and rig are not promised. Android and Apple Vision are not currently supported. Actual availability will be shown on the App Store listing when published.

Do the tests guarantee it will always work?

No. Real-music comparisons and automated checks help identify regressions on the available material. They do not cover every song, room, connection or live situation. Mac CPU measurements alone do not certify thermal behaviour or dropout-free long sessions on your iPad. Before a performance, try your repertoire and rig; when reporting a problem, include the mode, song, time in the song and what the display shows.
